Engineers triumph in Professionals’ cricket league 2024 with a thumping Cup Final Win

Engineers emerged victorious in the cup segment and the Architects emerged victorious in the plate segment of the Professionals Cricket League 2024 finals day, which happened today(6th October) at the Thurstan cricket grounds.



Eight teams namely – Engineers, Lawyers, Aviators, Marketers, Doctors, Surveyors, Architects and Town Planners competed in the first round where they got to play 7 games each.

Engineers, Lawyers, Aviators and Marketers qualified for the playoffs after grabbing the first 4 places in the points table at the end of preliminary stage.



In the first Qualifier, Engineers defeated Lawyers by 14 runs to seal their place in the final. In the Eliminator clash, Marketers beat Aviators by 6 wickets to set Qualifier 2 contest against Lawyers. In the second Qualifier, Marketers registered an 8-wicket win over Lawyers to book their place in the final.

Roshan Derling will lead Marketers Team while Geeth Sankalpa will lead Engineers in the final. Sankalpa will be a big asset for Engineers in the final as he is the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 286 runs in 7 innings.

Gayan Rupasinghe who represent Marketers in the final is the second highest run-getter of the tournament as he amassed 232 runs in 7 innings.

The left-arm spinner Moditha Weerasinghe will strengthen Marketers’ bowling attack as he is the second highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 15 wickets in 8 innings.

Engineers’ skipper Sankalpa who stole the limelight with his batting talents, showcased his bowling skills as well throughout the tournament becoming the third highest wicket-taker with 12 scalps in 8 innings.

The Engineers secured a dominant victory in the Cup Final, defeating the Marketers by a comprehensive 91-run margin. Batting first, the Engineers posted an impressive 212/9 in their 20 overs, with Thilanka Wijearthne leading the way for the Engineers with a blistering 84. Osura Mahadulwewa added a crucial 35 and Rumesh Madushanka also contributed with a brisk 33. In response, the Marketers struggled to find momentum, getting bowled out for 121 in 17.2 overs.

Gayan Rupasinghe and Damith Weerasinghe were the batters who went past the 20-mark run for the Marketers. Dinuja Illangarathna’s 3/19 and Chandula Welivita’s 2/16 helped the Engineers record this thumping win.

In the Plate Final, the Architects overcame the Town Planners with a convincing 58-run win. Akbar Deen’s stellar knock of 63 and Kanishka Padmapani’s steady 34 guided the Architects to 138 for the loss of 6 wickets in their 20 overs.

The Town Planners faltered in their chase, getting bundled out for just 80 runs, as Nadun Saputhanthri (3/11) and Manoj Champika (3/19) dismantled their batting lineup.
